We started to establish 500,000 ha of KalpaR tree [Millettia (Pongamia) pinnata] plantations in northern Australia within 5-7 years.
The Kalpa tree is being developed because it embodies a number of very important attributes:
It is an Australian native tree and is not a weed
It is tolerant to drought and salinity
It is a legume – produces its own nitrogen
The nuts are non-edible and the tree grows on marginal land, therefore does not compete with food production
The leaves are unpalatable to cattle, pasture grazing can commence once the trees are established: 3 to 5 years
Following extraction of oil the remaining seed cake is a high protein animal feed supplement.
PhytoFuel licensed its Technology to an American company developing Kalpa plantations in southern USA.
A 2-year feasibility study of PhytoFuel was fully funded by BP Australia.
PhytoFuel secured a grant of $463,316 from AusIndustry under Climate Ready program.
PhytoFuel secured a grant of $273,461 from Commercialisation Australia.
